Solvay Torrelavega Inaugurates Centenary Celebrations


The opening event was attended by 600 people, including all the local and regional authorities, who agreed that the Torrelavega plant is “an example to be followed”, and has a great future.


On 11th April last, Solvay held the opening event of the celebrations of its hundred years in Torrelavega, where it has earned unanimous recognition and institutional and social support for its work, and for its quality as a benchmark business in the Cantabria region.


The event was held in the Concha Espina Municipal Theatre, where a programme was unveiled of social, cultural, scientific and sports activities to be held throughout the year.

The event was attended by some 600 people, including major authorities, business leaders, contractors, employees and directors, with the Director of the Torrelavega factory, José Luis Zárate, and Luis Serrano, the Director General for Spain and Portugal.

José Luis Zárate highlighted the fact that Solvay Torrelavega was now facing the future “with great optimism”, because the sodium carbonate factory, which employs almost a thousand workers (Solvay and contractors), has many advantages, giving it a competitive edge. He emphasised the fact that the keys to the success of Solvay were its workers, its good relations with neighbouring towns and the regional Government, its spirit of constant innovation, and its position as a pioneer in welfare matters, both in relations with employees and in its local environment.

The Mayoress of Torrelavega, Blanca Rosa Gómez Morante, defined Solvay as “a magnificent exponent of the development of the town and of what Torrelavega is today”, and praised its constantly innovative work. “Solvay is a good neighbour, both as an employer, and in its way of doing things”, she ended.

For her part, the Vice President of the Government of Cantabria, Dolores Gorostiaga, talked about the Solvay’s “wholehearted policies of innovation and respect for the environment”, and said that this model should be emulated by other companies.

Finally, the President of the Government of Cantabria, Miguel Ángel Revilla, stated that Solvay “has brought together the whole Governing Council, mayors and councillors, in unanimous recognition of an exemplary
